About Women Transforming Media
Women Transforming Media is as an initiative of The MY HERO Project, a 501(c)3 organization whose mission is to celebrate the best of humanity. This initiative was made possible with the generous support of the American Association of University Women to create a blog dedicated to profiles of women who are transforming media, and the world. We are proud to be partnering with the AAUW, which has a distinguished history of empowering women.
At Women Transforming Media, we are mapping a constellation, from a unique vantage point between the non-profit space and the entertainment industry. We can see how both culture makers and issues-oriented organizations are working to address social, political and economic inequality based on gender.
We believe these two spaces are converging: Organizations focused on solving these problems turn to media more and more to amplify their message; the mainstream media are adopting concepts popularized a decade ago in the non-profit space, e.g., women are a good business investment. One of the most exciting developments has been the ACLU’s complaint regarding gender bias in hiring practices at the heart of the world’s cultural content maker, Hollywood.
Our hope is to multiply the connections between these spaces, and to make them more visible to each other — by highlighting the lives and work of women who are transforming the media landscape, and the world.
